Bake Your Own Bread

Homemade sourdough bread is the best thing ever.

I have a very long relationship with bread making. Or at least this is what I’d love to write over here. To be frank, my experience is only 1.5 year old with a 5 months break because I killed my sourdough starter meantime.

It has all started with me visiting Tartine Bakery when I was living in San Francisco. I am polish and I love polish bread, but the one made by Chad Robertson has killed my childhood memories. It rocked my world. I bought his book and I was all excited about making his bread. I read the recipe like 20 times and for the next half a year… nothing had happened. It is kind of complicated you know. Then I met my personal favourite baker Monika who gave me her amazing starter. I killed it. I think I wasn’t ready to bake and I had all this dilemma about a choice of flour and so on. Then I met another amazing food blogger Marta and this time she gave me starter plus flour. This made a deal. Ok, to be totally honest she gave the same package to my friend Julia and I’ve decided that I fail again, I’ll feel stupid, because I knew that Jula won’t. It took me about 24 hours to create the most amazing and delicious bread I’ve ever made! It was such a shocking experience, that since then I kept baking this particular bread every week. The cool thing is that it doesn’t really get old, so I always bake a huge loaf. Then a sad thing happened – I killed my starter. Yet again. I can only blame Mia – she was born and she totally rocked my world. One day I’ll tell her this story. Most probably when I’ll be too lazy to make this beautiful loaf and I’ll be trying to make her make one for me, hahaha. Why I’m writing it? Because homemade bread rocks. It’s delicious, fresh, your apartment smells like heaven (or bakery) and you have this small private satisfaction. I’ve started with the most difficult recipe I know. You can start with something much easier. But start, it’s worth it!

I won’t copy the recipe, it’s all over the internet 🙂 Find one over here or better, buy the book.

I’m so late but lady, what a post! That rustic loaf of bread is just the coolest thing ever. I’ve made a few starters and killed every single one of them. Some after days, others after weeks or months. This post encourages to get back on track and make a sourdough starter again. xoxo

I love Tartine too, and I am so scared to try making the bread, but I can imagine how magical and awesome the house is going to smell like with the freshly baked bread coming out of the oven… One day I want to try…. but with the kids and everything going on, I might afraid I kill the starter too!!! Maybe for my retirement. LOL! Your bread looks so good!!!

Sourdough starter is such a simple thing but rocks our world when we forget to feed it. I have a friend who is gracious enough to pass me some when I need it. You will definitely get back. I love the sourdough breads in San Francisco. Bread baking is the best. This is a good, great hunk of bread.

Sourdough starters are so hard to keep going! I’ve killed a couple of them. At least you had a good excuse – Mia! That’s a beautiful loaf of bread!! No one can resist homemade bread because there is nothing like it. A few years ago I got back into making bread again and am one happy camper. 🙂

Happy New Year! We love bread, and bake almost all of ours. Haven’t done sourdough, though — really need to get a starter going. Yours looks amazing — thanks!

I hope you find your starter again! It’s amazing to be rocked by such a simple thing…how awful that bread on shelves in the markets are able to get away with such a crime of all the unnecessary and toxic ingredients…it’s made me cut out bread in my diet. I hope to revive it with this recipe in my nest. Viva la bread!

Viva la bread! 🙂 I didn’t eat much of bread myself. I was spoiled by polish bread and then I didn’t like it that much in other countries. But homemade one is a totally different story 🙂

This looks so wonderful. I just devoured an article in one of my favourite food magazines about how to make a sourdough starter, how to feed it and how to make bread from it. 2016 is definitely going to be the year of the sourdough for me – I know I’m slow on the uptake! I’ve eaten plenty, I’m just yet to make my own.Fantastic photos.

So exciting! Go for it and I’m very curious about your adventure.

Beautiful! I too was given a sourdough starter from a friend months ago and while I don’t know for sure, I’m pretty sure it died…I tried to make bread with it once shortly after she gave it to me and it didn’t turn out well and I sadly gave up after that. I really should invest in a new starter and try again!

    • What should I eat for breakfas Reply

Ask your friend for a new one, the older it is better it works and I try this recipe:http://whatshouldieatforbre
It’s easy and the bread is amazing as well. Good luck 🙂

Thanks a lot- I’ll have to try again!

I got into bread baking over the past year, too, and it really is a revelation. I started with a much simpler loaf – just flour, yeast, salt and water so no starter to worry about – but I love sourdough so would love to get my hands stuck into it, quite literally, this year! There is something so satisfying about making bread – it takes time but it is so worth the effort. There’s nothing else like it!

    • What should I eat for breakfas Reply

Amy you were much smarter than me, hahaha. If I started with sth simpler, it wouldn’t take so long. Fingers crossed for this year challenge :*

I bake a lot of bread, but definitely NOT enough!! It’s always the best!

Bread is a special treat isn’t it? For me it means home, family, being together. We have a lot of traditions including bread in Poland, so it aways feel special for me 🙂

This looks incredible! I’ve had a sourdough starter going for over a year now but ironically I rarely use it simply for bread making. Thanks for snapping me to my senses and making me realize that I need to make some bread!

So your must be very strong by now, perfect for a bread. You should totally try to make Tartine Bread, it takes a lot of time, but it’s worth it. I’m in love 🙂
