Polish mountains are filled with tradition. You can still experience the uniqueness and see the beauty.
In Poland we have this saying, that when you have something on your stomach, you need to let it out. It is most probably a health related saying, but throughout the years, it became a “life quote”. This is what I’ll do right now. I am an old fool and I know it. We’ve just started our travel, we see the beautiful nature, travel through old forests and experience a bit of what Zakapiory (people who were living in Bieszczady when it was a totally wild, out of a car reach area) used to experience. Each day however, I miss my old camper van. The one that lost an exhaust pipe 1000 km after we started last year, then a wheel 34000 km later. The one that had 25 years of experience on the road, where everything had to be checked, which taught me a thing or two about a car engine (out of a need), which I fixed myself a couple of times and which was my home for 4 months.
I had no idea that I can get attached to a car. This year we’ve decided to make it easier and got a way newer and comfortable van, and I totally can’t get used to it. It goes uphill like a pro (which is well seen when you drive through the mountains), everything works, I can take a proper shower (not one out of a cup), and equipments work. But somehow it feels darker, more narrow and less attached to my heart. Another polish saying is that it’s easy to get used to a higher standard. In my case – so not true! I miss you Rimor Kontiki, my old friend. You failed me so many times, left me cold and wet in a middle of nowhere, you’ve decided not to heat when needed, got a whole wall wet, spit smoke on me at some point, but it’s all forgotten. I hope that you’ll be very happy in new hands and that your new owners will love you as much as I did.
Two weeks have passed and we’re in Croatia, after a total change of plans. Meantime I fell in love with our new home and, yet again, with life on the road. I wanted to write about our plan, but lets be honest here – since it already failed as I had to go back 1200 km to change an electro box in my car, the plan does not exist anymore. The only one is that we want to be on the road till the middle of September. We were in Bieszczady, Hungary and Romania which blew my mind with its beauty. We returned to Austria, checked out Slovenia and spent one night in Croatia, where I woke up to a smell of salt in the air. Pretty cool smell to wake up to.
Let’s start with Bieszczady. We went there to start out travel. We overlooked the fact that there was a long holiday weekend and the region was filled with people on a holiday break. Too many people, local restaurants crowded, no place to park our van, so we drove away to more far-away-areas, which was next to a border with Ukraine. This was where the magic happened and where we loved it most. Polish mountains are filled with tradition. I used to spend a lot of time in Zakopane, which is not in Bieszczady, but definitely in Polish mountains. I used to love the vibe in local restaurants, the music, the clothes and dialect. It all felt so special. It did not change. You can still experience the uniqueness and see the beauty.
As a child I always wanted to see polish bisons in their natural environment and I kind of did. We went to a national park, they were very far away, but I was jumping out of happiness. I saw them! I also sow a little ones and they were so cute. Mia was sleeping in a van, so I went back to tell Tomasz how beautiful they are and to go to check them out. At this moment a car stopped and one man told me to drive back 1km, because there is a big group of bisons eating grass next to a road. Guess what, I did listen to a random person I didn’t know, so we drove back and it was so beautiful! I was freaking out out of happiness and I could not stop staring. Mia slept through the whole experience, but I showed her some videos later on. She did not look more excited than when she sees a cow (she loves cows).
We also did eat a lot. Have you ever tried polish mountain cheese? If not, this should be on your “to do” list starting from now on. It’s a life changing experience for a foodie. Mostly because you’ll start to import it or going back to this place to buy it. In the mountains you can go to a hut in a forest where they produce it and this is a beautiful experience as well……
I’ve only been in Bieszczady once in my life, but after seeing your gorgeous photos, and reading this post, I’m really itching to go there again! Such a magical place!
Bet you’ll love your new wheels before long! Fun pictures, and always happy to see you start off on a new adventure. 🙂

Done, I love it 😀
It is always a pleasure to accompany you on your trips, Marta, but especially in this one because I do not know anything about this land and discover thanks to you that it is beautiful. You leave me very much to go

Poland is gorgeous, there’s so many places to see and things to experience.
Bieszczady są wspaniałe o każdej porze roku. Tutaj jak nigdzie indziej można znaleźć spokój, ciszę i nienaruszoną przyrodę. Niesamowicie uchwyciłaś żubry.

Dziękuję! I prawda, Bieszczady są wspaniałe
Oh I know how hard it is to part with the old, but look how easy it is to get use to the new. 🙂 Have a wonderful time on your next adventure. Looks like you are already off to a gorgeous start. Beautiful and so green!

It was magic. I cannot believe I saw them. They could not care less but I did care a lot
We were there one month ago. I was looking forward to get there few years after our first visit. Bieszczady are my favourite place to spent holidays. We were at this restaurant from your picture it’s Stare Sioło in Wetlina. Next it’s Chata Wędrowca where you can eat a big pancake with raspberrys and cream. Delicious and magical time. Now I’m also looking forward to get back to my favourite places and discover some new ones. 🙂 Maybe in next year.. I hope.
