Wernigerode is a great start to discover the Harz district.
For the past two months we drove from Germany to Greece, then took a ferry to Italy and meantime we stopped in many unique and beautiful places, perfect for a holiday or for a weekend break. I have quite a collection of places to share and hopefully you will like some of them as well or maybe even use some.
Let’s start with Wernigerode, located in the center of Germany, which is a great start to discover the Harz district. You can also make it our style, read “parents of a young kid style” – see the steam train and walk around the town.
The town itself is beautiful. Just look at the pictures. Whichever street you take, it will lead you to even more beautiful one. If you like architecture or simply pretty buildings, this town is for you. Kids love it as well, as it’s colourful and there’s a lot of ice cream spots. If I can give you one piece of advice, go for a walk super early in the morning, preferably with the sunrise. You will have all the streets just for yourself.
Another amazing thing you can see or even experience over here is the old steam train. You can take a ride, which will take you through the forests or do it my style – sneak into the forest and wait for it to pass you. I did it a couple of times. If you check the train schedule, you will know exactly at what time it will pass you and where it’s coming from. I really wanted to go for a ride, but it was one of these “no way” weekends for Mia and she was simply not interested. Mothers’ life is not always a bed of roses.
For campers enthusiasts – you have a parking just next to the old town, which has an area for campers (big applause for this one).
On the other hand, if you are travelling with your camper, I strongly suggest you visit Die Teufelsmauer (intriguing translation: devil’s wall) located in Weddersleben, Thale. We spent a night over there, on the edge of the village with a beautiful view on the rocks and fields. There were many local dog walkers passing us in the evening and everyone were very friendly and they did not mind us stopping there. In the morning I took a cup of coffee and went for a beautiful long walk. I must tell you that this particular stop made me even more excited about our travel.
Jakie klimatyczne miejsce. Warto czasem rozglądnąć się w niedalekiej okolicy bo taka perełka może czekać cichutko bardzo blisko.
Looks like a fairtale village, so beautiful!!
Beautiful as always! I was wondering you’re going to write a post about your whole trip from Germany to Greece? Where you stopped by, what are the best places for campers ect. Would be awesome to see your road map and read your impressions! Also, what next guys6 any plans for winter? 🙂 My best x
