“Breakfast” by Maurice Denis and my breakfast idea.
I’ve been asked many times about my inspirations for creating recipes and photography. I always say that it’s everything around, from a walk in a park, by visit on a local farmer’s market. I also say that art is very important for me. Whenever I have a moment of doubt, I go to a museum or a gallery and look. If you ever asked yourself what the benches in front of the paintings are for – it’s for me, I sit there quite a lot. I get inspired by colours, composition, light, story and even just the atmosphere. That’s why I got very excited to be a part of Alnatura’s #KunstKochen (cooking with art) . The whole idea is to get inspired by one of an amazing painting from the Städel Museum.
I chose “Breakfast” by Maurice Denis. And it was simply a pleasure to look at it and try to connect it with a breakfast that I could serve. I had many ideas, but when you start to analyse a painting, look at the details, you get an idea, which is somehow just yours. I saw all the small red elements and I wanted to make something with little red berries and it had to be something I will share with my family. This is how the crepe cake with a lemon mascarpone cream and berries was created. For me the beautiful part, next to delicious food, was the time I spent looking at a beautiful painting. It was so refreshing, I am sure it’s not the last time for me, I’ll definitely keep cooking with the art together with Mia. If you feel like a new challenge, check out #KunstKochen for more.
YOU WILL NEED FOR CREPES:
- 2 cups flour
- 2 cups milk
- 1,5 cup water
- pinch of salt
- pinch of vanilla sugar
- 3 eggs
- 4 tbsp olive oil
YOU WILL NEED FOR SERVING:
- 500g mascarpone
- 150g creme fraiche
- 2 tbsp sugar
- 1 tsp lemon zest
- juice from ½ lemon
- coconut flakes
- red berries
In a bowl mix mascarpone, creme fraiche, sugar, lemon zest and lemon juice.
Now the fun begins. You have to make layers of crepes. Place the first one on a plate, spread a bit of a mascarpone mix on it, sprinkle a pinch of coconut flakes. Repeat till the last crepe. In the end decorate it with berries. You can serve it the same or the next day.
Enjoy, Marta
The crepe cake looks so pretty and the whole image is like a piece of an art. It seems as if it is telling a story on its own. Lovely!

Me too and finally I had an inspiration to make them 🙂
This was really interesting to read. I like painting – impressionism and surrealism above any other current – but not in the way I love literature, or music, or even photography and fashion. It’s funny what inspires us and funny how it’s always different things, I get inspired a lot by songs, actually, but never was I inspired to cook something from a painting!! THis cake looks so airy and light, and at the same time makes me thing of freshly pressed linen sheets that have been hanging out in the sun all day… see, I made my own painting from your food!!
