These cross buns are to die for.
I can easily call myself a master of distraction and give myself a medal. I took Mia for a small trip yesterday to an Asian Huge Market. By huge I mean few hangars filled with little stores. It was like going back to my year in Asia, everything was there. I wanted to discover and spend time in each small store, but Mia has decided that we should leave after 15 minutes. So we did. She was so unhappy that I took her there that she made a big scene, but got distracted with a blue balloon rolling on a street. I thought I’d never let my kid play with things from a street, but we had fun with it through a long tram ride. Later we ended up in a park and my little girl had her first attempt to steal a bike. I am being serious over here. It was a pink bike for at least 7 years old girl with ribbons and all these things. She spent about 30 minutes watching it closely and was trying to figure out how to grab it and ride away. Fortunately she was too small and the bike was too big. Another huge scene was on its way, but fortunately I acted fast and distracted her with an ice cream. Yet again, my kid was not supposed to eat ice creams till she’s 18.
These cross buns are to die for. The coolest idea is to freeze half of them (you will consume at least half when they are still warm) and to eat them whenever you feel like it. This is what I like to do, to have options in my freezer. It took me a long time to learn how to use it and by now I think I know a few tricks and, what’s more important, good recipes. An original recipe for buns comes from BBC Good Food .
Have a great weekend!
You will need for cross buns:
- 300 ml milk
- 50g butter
- 500g flour
- 1 tsp salt
- 75g sugar
- 1 tbsp oil
- 1 sachet of yeast (7g)
- 1 egg
- 75g sultans
- 75g flour for cross
In a bowl, mix flour, salt, sugar and yeast. Heat milk, so it starts to boil, then remove it from a heat and add butter. The butter will melt and we have to wait till milk goes back to a room temperature. Add milk to a flour mix, then add egg and mix it. Then, using your hands, mix some more until you get a sticky dough.
Place the dough on a floured surface and knead for about 5 minutes. It will get elastic. Place it in an oiled bowl, cover with an oiled cling film and let it grow in a warm place for about 1 hour (it should double its size). When dough is big and nice, add raisins , knead in a bowl so it’s well distributed and leave again for 1 more hour.
Divide the dough into 15 equal pieces. Flour a surface and roll each piece into a bowl. Place each one on a tray covered with a baking paper. There should be a free space in between them, because they will grow. Cover with a tea towel and leave for another 1 hour.
Heat an oven to 200*C. Now let’s make mixture for a cross. Mix flour with 4 tbsp of water and mix. You’ll achieve a thick paste. Spoon it into a piping bag with a small nozzle. Make crosses on each bun.
Bake for 20 minutes on a middle shelf of your oven.
When ready try not to eat them all.
You will need for peaches:
- 1 peach
- 1 tbsp butter
- 2 tbsp honey
- 1 tsp of thyme
Cut peach in small pieces. Heat a pan with butter, honey and herbs. Add peach and fry so it gets covered with a honey mixture and gets softer.
Cut cross bun in half, place ricotta cheese and a peach inside. It’s so easy but so delicious.
Enjoy, Marta

She actually keeps doing it. She seems to be bike obsessed. Even yesterday she wanted to take one over 😀
Um, that story of your little girl? The CUTEST ;). And these buns + the sandwich in all have me drooling. Wish I could pop one of these on my plate every morning. xx

Thank you so much for this sweet comment
You knew waiting until 18 for ice cream was never going to happen. 🙂 Anyway, neat looking buns. We always freeze stuff too, otherwise we gobble it all up!
-
hahaha I know, I am sometimes so scared that she grows so fast. She’s the most precious girl for me 🙂
Sounds like somebody i know~ahem selah ahem. 😉 i think shes super active just like our little one! but rest assured, Marta, that that kind of willfulness comes in beautifully handy when they need to learn and make up their minds as they get older! And this is such pretty set of photos <33 One question: do you use a black panel/something to strengthen the shadows in the background? Hope you don’t mind the question!
-
Yes I do, I play with light quite a lot 🙂
I’ve actually never been a big fan of cross buns, but i love this idea of making them into a mini sweet sandwich!
-
I like it as well 😀 It was s o yummy 😀
there is no way I would be able to freeze half!
-
hahaha, that’s a good point 😀
I would love to wake up at your house every morning and have you feed me breakfast. You make the most delicious early morning meals and this one is up there at the top of my list. Hot bread, peaches and ricotta – absolutely delicious!

Thank you so much, hahaha. This is such a cool comment. Yep, I do it, I feed people with breakfasts 😀
Your photography is simply gorgeous — as are the buns, as is your story. I am a ricotta lover, easily sold.

Haha take me to an Asian market and I’ll be the happiest one. Mia sounds fiesty and so cute!!
Love the recipe – peaches & ricotta on toast for breakfast is one of my faves, but the cross buns kick it up another notch!

HA, Mia!!! What an adventure. The way that you describe her is always so vivid and hilarious, and even when she is getting into shenanigans, so touching — I always love reading your stories so much. Especially when accompanied by treats like these, which look so, so good! I’m with you, having an array of treats in the freezer is my favorite thing. Thank you for sharing, Marta!

Cynthia, there’s so many adventures in front of you 🙂 When the little one comes it will be so crazy strange and beautiful at once. But then he’ll discover food other than milk and it will be so much fun. Mia is a special girl, I love her like crazy even when she gets crazy 😀 Big big hug to you and thank you for the sweet comment.
So gorgeous!! I love the ricotta in there!

Thank you so much!
Ok, 2 hours ago I dreamt about Mia – I was baby sitting her <3
Don’t be hard with her, my boyfriend would have made a scene at the Asian market too 😛
-
Valentina you should definitely come over, you’d lave a blast. I have stay in bed with my leg up, as I had a small “incident” and she’s jumping on me all the time and brings me all the toys. She’s the best ! I love the comment about your boyfriend, you made me laugh like crazy 😀
-
Omg, I hope everything is okay Marta! But I’m sure she’ll heal you with her glee 😀 Yes, I love him and he’s the best I could ever find…but he’s like a child sometimes 😛 Especially his tastes in food : pasta al pomodoro, pizza, tacos with salsa, bruschetta al pomodoro, chocolate cake – “oh, what’s in this soup? Oh lemon grass? It tastes like citronella candles” (and he trows it away) ; or “can I taste this dessert? It looks good!” “honey it’s tapioca, I don’t think you’re going to like it” “Let me try it!”. He eats the pistachio topping, than he realize the tapioca’s consistence, he looks at me, he hands out the jar and says “I don’t like it”. I DESERVE a I-eat-everything child! ahahah
