One Day in Mostar

It was one of the hottest days in our life

It was a funny adventure and the fastest experience I had so far on my road trip. All because of the heat. We got to Mostar, which is a beautiful town in Bosnia and Herzegovina in August. We parked in a parking for campers (super convenient as it was around 5 minutes walk from the famous bridge plus it had a view of this bridge) and around 2pm we went for something to eat and for a walk. The food was amazing! We took a plate of local delicacies and it was so big, that my whole family (including parents, parents in law and siblings with their children) would be full after eating it. Local meals include a lot of meat, so it may be not the easiest part for the ones who do not eat it. In restaurants and cafes you have these pipes around which spay water to cool you down. It was very refreshing and made the whole eating experience way more fun (Mia was crazy excited about it). When we went for a walk it was around 3pm. We stopped to drink water like all the time and I must tell you that it was sunny, hot and I was tired after 5 minutes. It was over 42*C. There were some things that we’ve noticed – beautiful town, amazing bridge, lively cafes and restaurant. I was super tempted to sit in one of the cafes for half a day and I kind of did it. Next to these pipes splashing cold water around… We were observing the old bridge, where some local boys were calling tourists for donation, to encourage them to jump into the river. As you can see on the picture, the bridge is very high and the river filled with stones. Apparently this is a traditional local jump they made and I saw it a few times. Crazy!

Late evening we went for a walk through the town. It was about 40*C and even without the sun I felt zero relief. But I could feel many mosquitoes having a drink on me. The town was beautiful, but we apparently went there during the biggest heat wave and it made us super tired. After a light dinner we returned to our camper, which became a 12m2 sauna. It was one of the most difficult nights we had. We opened the window, but had to use mosquito nets as there were many of them around, ready to jump on us. I could not take a cold shower as the water heated itself to pretty hot. I must tell you that the night was so hot and made us so tired that in the morning, when the sun said hello, we said bye bye. We returned to Croatia, to be next to a cold sea.

Bosnia and Herzegovina were one of the biggest regrets of our Balkan travel, I truly regret not spending way more time over there. Mostar was so beautiful and I can only imagine how crazy beautiful it must be in the rest of the country. We will definitely come back out of the season or with the air con in our car.
