The Most Beautiful Beach in Portugal and Tortilla De Patatas

Tortilla de patatas is definitely a van food!

How do you imagine a perfect day? I just had one that I’ll remember for a long time. It may sound strange, as I have been travelling since 2 weeks and we visited so many beautiful spots, but this one was special. We were driving from Braga and waned to stop on a beach, somewhere calm for a night. I had a spot on mind, but somehow we left the original route. We ended up in a small town with lovely people and the most beautiful beach. It was huge, empty and waves had been just enormous. We were supposed to leave after breakfast, but I just felt like staying. Mia looked so happy running around, the weather was perfect and it felt like meditating just by sitting there. There was one cafe for the locals and we had a delicious breakfast for 3 people for 8 euros (it was pretty awesome). Coffee included. I met a man on a beach who asked me if the van is mine. I thought he wanted to tell me that I cannot park in the spot, but he told me that just 900m away there’s a better spot. We checked it and he was so right. Local fishermen smiled to us and we felt welcome.

When we came there was a fog covering everything around, this is how Portugese beaches looked for us so far in the early morning hours. I actually love it, it’s perfect for pictures and for morning coffee. But within an hour it was all sunny and beautiful.

So we stayed for two days and just chilled. I need breaks like this one from time to time. Sometimes I get crazy and drive too much as I want to see as much as possible. Of course it’s all worth it, but we need to slow down from time to time.

I also made some cooking, tortilla de patatas is definitely a van food 😀 I posted this recipe a few years ago but it’s worth reminding.

Also, pancakes with banana and chocolate worked pretty well. Mia was screaming out of happiness.

The Recipe

YOU WILL NEED:

  • 3 big potatoes
  • 1 onion
  • 1 garlic clove, cut in small pieces
  • 2/3 cup olive oil
  • 5-6 eggs
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ cup cheddar cheese, grated
Peel potatoes and onion and cut into slices. Heat a frying pan with oil over a medium heat and place garlic, onion and potatoes in it. Fry, stirring, until it gets soft (not brown), around 5-10 minutes.

Place potatoes and onions in a bowl and keep the rest of the oil. In a small bowl mix eggs with salt and add it to potatoes, then add grated cheese as well. Heat a medium frying pan with a tablespoon of oil and place potato and egg mix in it. Fry over a medium low heat until it gets golden on bottom, then cover tortilla with a plate and turn the pan around, so tortilla lands on this plate. Then place it with an uncooked side back on the pan and fry until this side is golden as well. It tastes great hot and cold.

Enjoy, Marta

Hello! I’m loving your trip and you blog so much! Just a quick note about the Tortilla de Patatas from a “born and raised” in Spain person 🙂 we don’t usually add cheese to the original recipe and the onions are optional too (I particularly love it with onions). However, we add many things from time to time like chorizo, morcilla, vegetables… usually cutting the Tortilla in half (named “Tortilla rellena”).Have fun north of the wall! 🙂

Portugal is pretty. Only been there once, decades ago, and very briefly so I’ve basically seen nothing. Want to go back! Fun read — thanks.

well seeing I’m portuguese, I do find we have some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. I think our beaches stand right at the edge of savage, of wild beaches, and in between the thin line that divides the paradisiac beaches from the random ones. We have it all, I think, the scenic, the clear watered, the ragings sea… wow, never thought I liked my own country this much!!!

Homer’s Odyssey starts with  the poet asking the Muse to inspire him through the narration of Ulysses ‘ adventures. People like you and your family can be one’s “Muse” to start thinking and acting differently. Furthermore, to gain confidence of one’s own potential to actually feel good and do good. But, it all starts with a good breakfast, doesn’ t it? And then, you may feel joyful and strong to go off the beaten track.
Keep on travelling , van cooking and telling stories, Marta. It is a comfort to follow!
