Toast with Vegemite Aka Australian Breakfast

You look at the first picture and you may think that this is a chocolate spread. Not even close. I am still on a subject of Australian breakfasts and this, my friends, is Vegemite. Have you ever heard about it? If you’re not Australian or haven’t visited this beautiful country yet, most probably you haven’t.

I remember the first time I’ve learned about it. My Australian friend came over for a breakfast and he asked me if I had it. Of course I had no idea what he was talking about. He told me how delicious it was and that toast with vegemite would be a real Australian breakfast. I bought a jar and was very excited about tasting a new interesting flavour. And then I did. I think I won’t eat many more vegemite toasts in my life.

So this is an honest truth – Vegemite is a very specific paste, you’ll love it or hate it. It is a yeast extract mixed with veggies and spices. For me it tastes like a mix of dried veggies and reminds me a bit of a chicken soup. But for sure it goes awesome as an addition to a cheese and tomato sandwich.

The choice as always is yours, you can try it and it will either rock your morning world, or you may not like it that much. But maybe you have a homesick Australian friend around and you can make his day by serving it.

PS. Jas from The Gluten Free Scallywag left a good comment for vegemite beginners – you need to put a very thin layer on your toast.

Been eating this stuff for 25 years! I make a spread out of butter and Vegemite and spread it on toast or bread. Basically, a little bit of Vegemite mixed with about two tablespoons of soft butter. Mmmmmm good!! ???Just bought a new jar–haven’t had it in years and have been craving it! Am goin’ to make myself another slice of Vegemite toast right now!! ?

yes I am aussie and love vegemite – grew up loving vegemite – went into the promite camp (which I think is more like marmite as it is a little sweeter than vegemite but not too familiar with marmite except that it was the reason vegemite was first called pawill – think about it) and now I find myself back into vegemite – love it with tomato and cracked pepper on toast – food of the gods!

As an Australian, I love my Vegemite! I think that you have to be brought up on it to like it though. It’s super expensive here in Germany so I get care packages sent over through considerate friends and family to keep my Vegemite hunger satiated. 🙂http://www.departmentofwandering.com

Breakfast of champions, and probably the first thing we Aussie kids learn how to make in the kitchen.
Critical : don’t use too much vegemite (just use a smear to start), and if you choose to butter your toast first, make sure you butter right to the edges !
Try dunking vegemite “soldiers” (toast cut into fingers) into soft boiled egg, or try vegemite & avocado on toast. Yummo !

I’m a seasoned vegemite-loving Aussie – I have it on toast for breakfast almost every day – but I have to say the amount you’ve got on your bagel in those last couple of photos would make me sick! Haha. For me, moderation is key – maybe half that amount is my perfect amount 🙂

I’ve had vegemite, but have to say I’m not really a fan. Love the idea, but the flavor just doesn’t do anything for me, alas. Great pictures, though!

I have never heard of vegemite, but it does sound like a very peculiar ingredient. Would be interesting to try it once 🙂

I’ve never tried vegemite, but I hear it’s very much like marmite, which I love! I make marmite roasted cashews all the time 🙂

Very similar to marmite, something I love. Like a lot! You should really try a mixture of cream cheese and marmite/vegemite on toast; it’s so good!

Good ol’ vegemite, I miss it now as being gluten free I can’t eat it, but being Aussie I ate it on toast often. The trick if you’re going for vegemite on toast is the quantity, there’s an almost art form to this aussie spread, alot of butter is preferred by most and not too much vegemite. I remember teaching my UK friends how to eat it after they had smeared it on like jam, ha, so not the way to go, it’s too strong! Love that you’re sharing this spread that is, as you are oh so correct in saying either loved or hated!

How can you??!?! Australian would be furious at you for saying those two names in one sentence! 😉 But between us, yes – they are similar. I would say Marmite is probably tangier… 😛

      • Lotta Reply

Marmite is basically the New Zealand version of vegemite! Which is why there is a little competition surrounding which one is better! 🙂
