How our way of travelling changed.
We’re in Lisbon with Mia and Tomasz and I don’t have many breakfast to share out of an obvious reason – I got addicted to pastel de nata and I run each morning to get few for breakfast. We also take advantage of markets and eat plenty of delicious fruits. I love Lisbon, it’s vibe and architecture. The only disadvantage is lack of a perfect cup of flat white, but hopefully I’ll find a good place soon. Oh and getting good cup of coffee at 7-8 am is not really possible over here. Or maybe I’m looking in wrong places?
What I do have is time. I walk around with Mia quite a lot and I think and try to see what has changed in my lifestyle. Let me explain. I’ve been traveling and changing places since 2007, when we’ve moved to Sydney. It’s also been a time when I started my first blog Golden Times. We – me and my partner in crime Tomasz, like to experience new places, flavours and cultures. And then Mia became a part of our life and nothing has changed except for everything.
We fly. But I can hardly remember me getting excited before a long flight. Gin and tonic in my hand, going through movies options, checking on snacks, walks with Tomasz to get ice creams and drinks with new friends in stewardess’ area. Oh how I miss these days and gin and tonic. I used to ask Tomasz to check on me, as I didn’t want to sleep and miss all excitement of a flight. When we fly with our 5 kg of sugar I am totally aware, I don’t sleep because I’m not sure if Mia doesn’t have problems with pressure. She doesn’t, but I still check on her even though she’s most of the time sleeping and she looks like she loves flying. Tomasz still sleeps.
Travel from/to an airport. We used to choose the cheapest option and then spend money on food. Now we choose the comfortable option as Mia travels with a big baggage. She has a seat she loves and we love her being relaxed and happy so we take the seat with us.
Accommodation – it wasn’t important as we never spent too much time over there. Now we do and it has to be comfy for us and her, so additional room is a must, what means she sleeps and we can talk with a light on.
Bars – I don’t remember the last time I had a drink. I miss having an occasional drink. I pass bars and I don’t get in. Tomasz does from time to time. By now I feel like having a shot of icy cold vodka. And one day I will 🙂
Restaurants – we used to spend evenings over there. Now brunches/lunches make more sense.
Wandering around new city without a plan – this one is still on. I just need a carrier, stroller (yes, I do use stroller in Lisbon and it’s totally possible), diaper equipment and my breasts.
Everything looks quite the same but in the evening I prefer to jump into my bed and sleep over drinking wine on high stairs with a view on a city. But hey, Mia is only 3 months old, in a year she will sit with me and enjoy the view. Obviously I won’t give her wine 😉
5kg of sugar is just the cutest! My husband and i have been thinking about having a child, but we were worried that we would give up our travel. After reading this post, and seeing David and Luise travel the world with kids, I know that it is possible to travel with children well, although, not easily. I love the photos here. Portugal looks lovely.
You sound so honest!!! I love your pictures 🙂https://aspoonfulofnature.w…
It makes me really happy that you’re enjoying Portugal! And no cups of coffee it’s not our costume but I hope you’ll find something that you really like!
This is such a beautiful post. I absolutely love that you call her your ‘5 kg of sugar.’ I can’t imagine what a huge lifestyle shift this must be for you, but I can assure you that someday Mia will see all the love you’ve given her and be beyond grateful for you and Tomasz. She’s so lucky to have you two as her parents! <3
Are these pictures in Lisbon? The balcony looks like it is 🙂 and I never realised you had an other blog! Thanks for mentioning itLike Susana said, if you’re looking for a big cup of american-like coffee, I’m afraid I have no solutions besides Starbucks, sorry! It’s an expresso country you’re in, we either drink that or an expresso with some (or a lot) of milk. The international barista scene hasn’t made it there yet, and I doubt it ever will.
I also have no idea what a flat white is exactly, only that it’s what I ordered in London so I wouldn’t get chocolate on top like the cappuccino (why is chocolate powder standard on the cappuccino over there? so weird). I guess the closest thing is a “meia de leite”? The galão is closer in proportion, but they only make it foamy in the Azores, for some reason. It was weird for me too when I moved to the mainland.PS: Yay! Glad strollers are doable!
I hope you enjoy the lovely Lisbon. And pasteis de nata are sooooo addictive! But, Lisbon has great coffee at 7am, I’m sure u’ll find a nice spot 🙂
What a lovely post, Marta! I so enjoy reading about your life with Mia. <3
Woohoo!
Life does change a bit with a child, doesn’t it? Just wait until she grows up a bit — things will change even more! 🙂
Something changes for worst something for better ..changes are good and I am so happy having you around.
Being a parent are a lifetime commitment… But I’m sure it is worth all the “hassle”!Lovely pictures.Cheers,Rosa
I don’t understand why you say you can’t have a cup of coffee at 7-8 am! What do you mean by coffee? I mean… we do have the best coffee (expresso) over here. But maybe you’re referring to a big cup of a tall coffee and not expresso… in that case, well… it’s not our costume I’ll admit.
Do enjoy our marvelous pasteis de nata, and we have so much more. Have you been to sintra? You must try the Travesseiros and Queijadas de Sintra.
I wish you all the best in your traveling and in your life… and I love to read you.
I just love your true life stories! 🙂 thank you for sharing these precious times with us! I Was reading and smiling all the time 🙂 it’s so great that we see not only your photos and recipes (btw they are awesome!) but also you as a person! I think it’s important now as most blogs are starting to be only business. So thank you! 🙂
It is going to change but for worse (in some aspects..) If you think that you are going to “sit and watch” you are so wrong..:) You will be running after your little daughter all the time when she turns 1 year:)

Mind if I butt in? Haha. Ohhh mannn am I busy running (errrr more like sprinting) after my daughter nowadays! It’s such a fun season with her being almost 2, but I’m the only crazy lady running around wherever I go because she’s so hyperactive. :PAnd yes Marta, enjoy every stage as it comes because we only get to experience each one ONCE. <3Ps: I loved seeing a picture of you two together, yayyyy!!!

hahaha, I want to live in my illusion for a while. But I don’t mind chasing her with a glass of wine 😉 Thank you for the comment.
I enjoyed to follow your Lisbon adventures on IG; all those gorgeous pics made me want to finally travel to that city I’ve wanted to visit for so long. Loved to read your thoughts on how your life and traveling has changed since Mia joined your family. Those moments together, traveling and exploring, are so prescious, and I’m glad to see that you’re excited to show your daughter all those things you love about life the most. xx
